This series of web pages is designed to assist medical practitioners in formulating lower extremity treatment plans for patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. A strong emphasis is placed on both treatment and prevention of pathology due to diabetic neuropathy, vascular insufficiency, and musculoskeletal deformities of the foot and ankle.
The assessment of risk is made by answering a series of hyperlinked questions pertaining to history and physical examination findings in a patient diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Terms and concepts which may be unfamiliar to some clinicians are hyperlinked to additional pages which explain these terms. After answering the questions, a web page is displayed which presents appropriate treatment guidelines designed to prevent pathological sequelae.
The Treatment-based Diabetic Foot Risk Calculator is based upon an article entitled Treatment-based Classification System for Assessment and Care of Diabetic Feet (Journal of the Amer. Podiatric Med. Assn., Vol. 87, No. 7, July 1996) which was authored by David G. Armstrong, DPM, Lawrence A. Lavery, DPM, MPH, and Lawrence B. Harkless, DPM of the Department of Orthopaedics and the Diabetic Foot Research Group at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. If you would like to request a reprint of the article, please click here.
PLEASE NOTE: this web site is designed to ASSIST in assessing and treating diabetic foot pathology.
