Diagnosing Diabetes Mellitus


One of three criteria must be present in order to establish a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus:

  1. random plasma glucose concentration greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL
  2. plasma glucose concentration greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL 2 hours after ingesting 75g of glucose
  3. fasting plasma glucose concentration greater than or equal to 140 mg/dL
