Director - David C. Stege, DPM

COLUMBIA Saddleback Valley Outpatient Surgery Center sponsors a progressive 12 month Podiatric Surgical Residency program (PSR-12) suitable for an individual whom has completed a rotating podiatric residency (RPR).

Located in Laguna Hills, California it is approximately halfway between the cites of Los Angeles and San Diego, in the southern part of Orange County. The facility's nearby communities include Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Laguna Beach, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point. The facility attracts surgeons and patients from an even larger geographic area due to regions indigenous freeway system.

Saddleback Podiatric Surgical Residency Program, developed and supported by the Podiatric Residency Institute, Inc., was originally affiliated with the California College of Podiatric Medicine as a RPR. Saddleback received its candidate Status PSR-12 from the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, and is now in its second year of operation. Full accreditation is expected this spring, after our on site visit, since podiatric admissions have exceeded expectations. Staffed by approximately 20 podiatric surgeons, over half Board Certified by the ABPS, the facility generates a formidable caseload for our resident. Orthopedics accounts for the majority of admissions to the facility, which is comprised of a medical staff from nearly every surgical specialty. Fully integrated with managed care, and newly acquired by giant COLUMBIA, the facility and Saddleback Podiatric Surgical Residency Program are expected to maintain their exceptional standing.
Saddleback's one resident has rotations in the outside community as well as at the surgery center.

Current rotations include:

The resident is responsible for all the podiatric cases at the surgical center and participates in cooperative educational programs and journal clubs with the other regional residency programs. Rheumatology rotation also includes inpatient rounds at UC Irvine-Medical School with the medical residents.

Surgical emphasis of this program is general podiatric surgery which includes forefoot, some rearfoot and endoscopic procedures. The current resident trains with approximately 40 podiatric procedures per month.

Didactic emphasis of this program is research and publication. Several clinical studies are being developed and implemented with the intent to enhance podiatric literature. The resident is also responsible for writing a monthly newsletter on a pertinent topic.

This position currently carries a stipend of $15,000/year with health benefits available through the Podiatric Residency Institute, Inc. Saddleback Podiatric Surgical Residency Program offers an opportunity for a highly motivated individual to enhance ones surgical skills and education, while developing viable scientific publications. Thank you for your interest in Columbia Saddleback Valley Outpatient Surgery Center, and its podiatric program, and our best wishes in your post graduate training.
