When walking in a conventional brace, the leg and ankle tend to shift from front to back, and from side to side. But in the Pneumatic Walker™, individual aircells resist this motion, and their pressures rise and fall with every step. The aircells are custom inflated by the patient with a pressure-regulated bulb for controlled compression. The security and comfort of higher pressure at the ankle, and lower pressure at the calf encourages the return to normal function. When used as an adjunct therapy to treat fractures of the lower leg, research has shown that the Pneumatic Walker™ "allows a quicker return to normal function than in comparable cases treated by other methods."
